The new free Renfe passes for 2023 can be purchased from today: how to buy and conditions

After the approval yesterday by the Council of Ministers of the free passes for 2023, Renfe will create specific multi-trip tickets, which will be valid for each calendar four-month period of the next year.

How can you buy the free Renfe 2023 passes?

The purchase of passes is possible through the Renfe Cercanías app or, in the case of Media Distancia and Avant, on the company's website.

To acquire the free season ticket, it is necessary to deposit a deposit of 10 euros in the case of Cercanías and Rodalies, and 20 euros for each conventional Media Distancia service. Payment by card will allow the automatic return of the deposit, once it is verified that the condition of having made 16 trips during these four months has been met.

Travelers who have used the free commuter pass for Cercanías, Rodalies or Media Distancia in 2022 will have their deposit returned in January, provided they have met the conditions thereof.

Since last December 7, new measures have been in force that modify the sale and use operations of free Media Distancia multi-trip tickets, penalizing repeated irregular uses. So far, 200 season tickets have been withdrawn.

Passes for Media Distancia trains are included in the 100% bonus. As confirmed by Renfe, it is a "one-person, personalized and non-transferable pass, valid for unlimited trips, indistinctly round-trip, on authorized trains and between the two stations of the purchased route", confirms

In addition, the Metric Gauge Cercanías trains are also free. "Unipersonal, personalized and non-transferable pass, valid for unlimited trips between any origin and destination of the Nucleus for which the pass has been issued", they point out in Renfe.

AVANT

The extension of the free service to 2023 also includes the Avant services between Ourense and A Coruña and between Madrid and Salamanca that are provided on the conventional gauge network, and the new ones from Murcia-Alicante on the high-performance network.

For the rest of Avant's rail services, the 50% discount is extended, which will also be used for other high-speed routes that have been declared a Public Service Obligation (OSP).
